Building the ICEHOTEL
Ice is not the most practical construction material, but an art exhibition and hotel built entirely of natural ice and snow creates one of the most unique overnight experiences in the world. The world’s first ice hotel was completed in 1989 in Jukkasjärvi north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Show more
Every spring the hotel and accompanying art exhibition melts back into the Torne River from where the ice is harvested. And the following winter a new hotel with all-new artwork is built up again. Artists come from all over the world to help fill the walls, floors and ceilings of the hotel with unique and ephemeral designs. As of 2016, parts of the hotel will stay open year round, cooled with solar power from the midnight sun. Show less
